Gallery Care Assistants

In 2011, the VMFA Conservation and Registration staffs recognized the need for additional help in maintaining the permanent collections and began a training program for Council volunteers, subsequently named the Gallery Care Assistants or GCAs.

Gallery Care Assistants function as the eyes for those two staff divisions. Through trained observations, GCA members check works of art and exhibition cases for dust, grime, finger/nose prints, damage, insects, and more. Routine maintenance addresses some of these concerns. Others require creating an observation report, which is sent to VMFA staff. Each GCA typically works 1.5 to 2 hours per shift on the same day each week.

The GCA team looks forward to growing with the musuem's future expansion. The GCAs serve 365 days a year during the quiet hours of 7:30 to 10:00 a.m. Being a team member offers a unique opportunity to spend quality time with the riches of the permanent collection and the works featured in special exhibitions.
